Elected to the City Council in 2012, Cantrell has prioritized improving people’s lives. On May 7, 2018, Mayor Cantrell was sworn in as the first female Mayor of New Orleans, just in time to celebrate the city’s tricentennial, or 300th anniversary. Mayor Cantrell announced the launch of CleanUpNOLA, a city-wide, fully coordinated initiative that will unite the efforts of multiple civil departments and the community behind a single goal for a cleaner, healthier and more welcoming city.
The Department of Sanitation directs all activities related to garbage collection, disposal, recycling, and street cleaning, including registration of new garbage and recycling cans. It is also responsible for ensuring compliance of local, state, and federal regulations for solid waste collection and disposal for the City of New Orleans.

Safety and Permits administers and enforces standards for the construction and use of buildings and property; promotes and protects the public's interest and safety to life and property; and enforces the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinances (CZO) to protect the quality of our neighborhoods.

The Department of Public Works is composed of five divisions responsible for maintaining approximately 1,547 miles of streets (21 million square yards of pavement) and 149 bridges in the ity of New Orleans. This system includes 65,000 catch basins and approximately 8,200,000 linear feet of drainage lines. The department inspects and cleans catch basins, repairs pot holes, replaces street signs, removes bandit signs, and removes abandoned vehicles.

New Orleans offers thousands of acres of green space for visitors and residents to enjoy, which includes parks, playgrounds, city squares, neutral grounds, and street trees. Parks and Parkways manages, maintains, develops, beautifies and preserves over 2,000 acres of New Orleans' public green space, which includes 2 major parks, 200 smaller parks and squares, New Orleans' neutral grounds, and over 450,000 trees.

The Department of Code Enforcement works to eliminate blight in New Orleans by ensuring every building is in compliance with City Code and enforcing building codes against properties that are determined to be public nuisances. The purpose is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public and the owners and occupants of dwellings and dwelling units used or intended to be used for the purposes of human habitation.

The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board works to enhance the quality of life in New Orleans by monitoring and controlling populations of mosquitoes, termites, and rodents, to reduce rodent and insect-borne disease and destruction. This includes removing waste tires. The Board manages all pest populations in the most environmentally safe, efficient and economical manner.

The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board serves the people of New Orleans and improves their quality of life by providing safe drinking water; removing waste water for safe return to the environment; and draining storm water to protect our community. Our team of experts do this reliably, continuously, and at a reasonable cost.
